New Student Orientation in Letters & Sciences

Advising Session

Welcome newly admitted Letters and Sciences students. We look forward to meeting you and helping you get started at the University of Maryland. Our advisors will work with you at orientation and throughout your time with Letters and Science to get you registered for courses and help you "Prepare to Declare" one of the 100+ degree-granting majors that are available here at UM.

Before getting started please make sure you have first confirmed your admission to the University of Maryland. Once you have completed that step you can proceed to the following:

  1. Register for an Orientation Date
  2. Complete the Letters & Sciences Orientation Survey
  3. Properly Prepare for the Orientation Session
  4. Review Information on Majors You Can Declare Before Orientation
  5. Review List of Items to Bring to Orientation

1. Register for an Orientation Date

All newly admitted students must attend a mandatory orientation before being able to register for classes. Students can register for an Orientation date by visiting the Orientation Office website. Orientation dates have space limitations and are filled on a first-come first-served basis, so register for an orientation program as soon as you confirm your admission.

2. Complete the Letters & Sciences Orientation Survey

It is critical that you complete and submit the online survey as soon as possible. The information will help us in our efforts to prepare for your orientation program.

  • The survey will be made available no later than 2 weeks prior to your orientation.

3. Properly Prepare for the Orientation Session

After registering for Orientation and completing the Orientation Survey, we ask that you do the following to prepare for your orientation program.

The more prepared students are before attending an orientation program, the more smoothly and efficiently the academic advising session will run.
