Markets & Society is an exciting program within Letters and Sciences for students interested in exploring the world of business. It is a wonderful opportunity for broad exposure to this particular area. The program is designed to provide students with the benefits of interacting with small groups of peers and faculty, and one-on-one academic advising.

Participating in Markets & Society will allow you to explore the world of business careers and related academic programs while you refine your career goals. By participating in the program, you are offered the opportunity to take introductory courses applicable to a degree in the Robert H. Smith School of Business along with other classes and seminars to assist you in exploring your career goals.

Frequently Asked Questions

How are students selected to participate in Markets & Society?
In the early spring, a select group of high school seniors are invited to participate in the program based on their high school record and interest in the business major. Please note that the program is open only to entering first year students at the University. The Office of Undergraduate Admissions extends offers of participation to students who have expressed an interest in business and meet the guidelines established by admissions.

How do students benefit from participating in Markets & Society?
Students take a group of courses together, also known as cluster, during their first year of enrollment. Seats are reserved for these students in courses that all students are required to complete in order to apply for admission to the Robert H. Smith School of Business. Students have an assigned advisor who will work with them to create a plan for completing the requirements for applying to the Robert H. Smith School of Business and to also help them create an alternative plan if they decide not to pursue Business as a major. Through the clusters and other events, Markets & Society provides students with a more intimate community within the larger University setting.

How does participation in Markets & Society prepare students for application to the Robert H. Smith School?
M&S assists students in defining and refining their goals through its informative and experiential curriculum and by guaranteeing spaces in most courses required for admission to the Robert H. Smith School of Business. Students in the program will also have an opportunity to participate in programming and activities that will allow them to gain exposure to the field of Business. The Robert H. Smith School of Business has a competitive admissions process. All students interested in a Business major are required to complete a set of gateway requirements and submit an application for review.

The Markets & Society curriculum is designed to help students expand their knowledge and gain skills necessary to pursue business, both academically and professionally. Students take a group of courses together, also known as cluster, during their first year of enrollment.

Cluster courses are integral to Markets & Society. They provide students an opportunity to engage in a community of learners who share (their) common goals. In addition, cluster courses help breakdown the size of the institution and provide ample opportunities for interaction, learning and growth.

During the Spring semester, Markets & Society students will also enroll in ECON 200 - Principles of Micro-Economics, provided they have the appropriate math placement level.

 

Additional Course Information

BMGT 110 - Introduction to Business and Management
This course is an excellent survey of the field of business including its environment, organization, overall and functional management, and current issues and developments.

ENGL 101 – Introduction to Writing
This is an introductory course in expository writing.

ECON 200Principles of Micro-Economics
This course is an introduction to the economic models of the behavior of individual consumers and business firms, problems of international trade, the distribution of income, policies for eliminating poverty and discrimination, the problems of environmental pollution, and the impact of different market structures upon economic activity.

COMM 107 - Oral Communication Principles
This course focuses on the study of and practice in oral communication including principles of interviewing, group discussion, listening, informative briefings and persuasive speeches.

UNIV 100 - The Student in the University
This course introduces students to University life. In a small classroom setting, students will explore how to successfully bridge the gap between high school and college. Study skills, career decision-making, and student development process will be explored.

UNIV 108 - Markets & Society Colloquium
This course will further investigate the world of business through assignments and a speaker series featuring professionals in the business field. Students will learn about resume writing, interviewing, internships and more.
