Academic Advising Policy

All Letters and Sciences students are governed under the mandatory advising policy. This policy is in accordance with the campus Student Academic Success Degree Completion Policy. Letters & Sciences students will be expected to adhere to the following guidelines:

  1. Student Advising Agreement
  2. Mandatory Advising (Appointments, Exploration Activity & 4 Semester Plan)
  3. Completion of Fundamental English & Math Requirements by 30 Credits
  4. Declaring a Degree-Granting Major by 60 Credits

 

1. Student Advising Agreement

New students to Letters and Sciences sign a student advising agreement during Orientation or a Change of Major workshop. An advisor reviews the content of the agreement and signs off on the form. The student is given a copy of the agreement and a copy is kept in the student’s advising record. Topics covered in this agreement:

  • Major declaration deadlines and requirements
  • Reminders about the Exploration Activity and Four Semester Plan
  • Information about General Education Requirements (CORE or GenEd)

2. Mandatory Advising

Appointments: All students within Letters and Sciences are assigned to academic advisors who monitor their progress, help them prepare for the future and serve as a campus resource. All students have mandatory advising required before they will be cleared to register for the upcoming semester. Students are required to meet between 1 to 3 times depending on their class standing and status. Students should have their first meeting early in the semester and schedule their additional meetings well in advance of their registration date for the following semester. The number of required advising appointments are:

  • First Semester at UMD: 2 advising meetings required
  • Under 30 Credits Students: 2 advising meetings per semester
  • Between 30 - 60 Credits: 1 advising meeting per semester
  • Students on Probation/Dismissal: 3 advising meetings per semester

Students should not wait until last minute to schedule their required appointments. After the mid-point of the semester advisors' calendars fill-up so students that procrastinate may need to wait a week or more to see their advisor. Additionally, students that arrive late (more than 9 minutes) for any appointment will be asked to reschedule.

 

4 Semester Plan: LTSC is not a degree granting major and all students are required to declare a major in a degree granting program by the completion of their 60th credit. Every degree granting major has a Four Year Academic Plan that students can use as a guide for choosing classes each semester. Since students can only remain in LTSC for 4 semesters at most, they are required to complete an academic plan that maps out what classes they will complete over 4 semesters. Most students will declare their major before their 60th credit, so the plan assists students in making a smooth transition into their major.

  • Students should not wait until last minute to submit a plan for approval. Once submitted advisors may need several days to review and once reviewed, additional changes may be needed.

Exploration Activity: Each semester LTSC students will be required to explore possible majors or learn more about a particular major they have in mind. These exploration activities may range from taking an introductory major course, attending an information workshop, taking UNIV100, meeting with a department advisor, shadowing a professional in a particular field, or meeting with a career advisor in the Career Center. Students will work with their advisor to determine which type of exploration activity will be appropriate for their situation.

3. Completion of Fundamental English & Math by 30 Credits

Letters and Sciences students are expected to complete the General Education Fundamental English and Math requirements by 30 credits at the University. Failure to complete this requirement will result in a registration block and you will be required to register in person with the Registrar's Office.

4. Declaring a Degree-Granting Major by 60 Credits

University policy states that students must declare a degree-granting major by the semester in which they complete 60 credits. Failure to declare a degree-granting major will result in a registration block. Students that are applying to one of the competitive Limited Enrollment Programs are strongly encouraged to declare their alternate major during the application process.
